         Medieval to Modern Music

            A Not-for-Profit Educational Ensemble

The Adirondack Baroque Consort is one of the oldest early music performing groups in the United States.  Their goal is to make music – from medieval to modern -- come alive.  The Consort, known as the ABC, was formed almost fifty years ago in 1962 by the late Dr. Maurice C. Whitney, who was Director of Music for the Glens Falls City Schools.  The Consort has performed throughout the northeastern U.S. Among the venues in the Albany area are the Troy Music Hall, Saint Paul’s of Troy Tuesdays at Noon Concert series, the Medieval Faire at Albany's All Saints Cathedral, Schuyler Mansion, the East Greenbush Library, and First Night celebrations in Albany and Saratoga.

The Consort has an active schedule of concertizing and musical lectures at historic houses, schools, colleges, libraries, churches, senior residences and organizational gatherings. The group also performs at weddings and special events where early music is appropriate.  Programs include medieval to modern music played on instruments such as recorders, krummhorns, viols da gamba, cello, Glastonbury pipes, keyboard and various percussion. The consort is a registered not-for-profit educational organization; all the artists volunteer their time and talent. Contributions to the Adirondack Baroque Consort are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

As part of their commitment to continuing education in the field of early music, the group, in 1989, endowed the Margaret S. DeMarsh National Recorder Scholarship administered by the American Recorder Society.  Margaret was the third director and a founding member of the consort.  The group also underwrites the Jane and William Coffey Regional Music Scholarship Fund established in 2005 and administered by the Hudson-Mohawk Chapter of the American Recorder Society.  Bill and Jane, who retired from the group in 2004, were also founding members.  Proceeds from concerts and donations are used to support the scholarships and to purchase instruments and music.
